What Appliances Need Testing?

Any electrical appliance that  can be connected to the electrical mains by a cable and plug or fused spur needs to be maintained to prevent it from becoming unsafe.

In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, commonly known as PAT testing, relates to ALL in-service appliances provided by any business in their premises or workplace.

The Electricity At Work Regulations Act 1989 Regulation 2(1) states:  "Electrical equipment includes anything used, intended to be used or installed for use, to generate, provide, transmit, transform, rectify, convert, conduct, distribute, control, store, measure or use electrical energy."

Some people are under the mis-apprehension that only portable appliances require testing.  It is in fact the testing machine used to carry out the procedure that is "portable" in this sense.

As well as static equipment such as computer monitors the guidelines cover electrical appliances owned by employees, for example mobile phone chargers, radios, fans, heaters, etc.,  who use them at work as these can obviously cause harm to those using them and others in close proximity.

The Regulations apply to ALL appliances used within working hours as if they were the property of the business.

PLEASE NOTE THAT MOBILE PHONE CHARGERS ARE ONE OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF FIRE ON BUSINESS PREMISES AND IN THE HOME
