The Testing Process
Portable appliance testing consists of various tests on the appliance which are carried out in a systematic manner. Before any electrical tests are performed a thorough visual inspection of the appliance, flex and plug is carried out. This visual check consists of:
Checks involved and questions asked
- check plug casing for damage
- removal of the plug cover
- check correct fuse amperage rating
- check for correct wiring
- check terminals and connections are secure
- check there is minimal bare wire
- check for signs of over-heating discolouration
- check for mis-use / ingress of liguids or foreign matter
- check cable / cord grips
- Is there damage (apart from light scuffing) to the cable sheath, is it bent or kinked?
- Is the plug damaged, for example is the casing cracked or the pins bent?
- Are there inadequate joints including taped joints in the cable?
- Is the outer sheath of the cable secured where it enters the plug or the equipment?
- Has the equipment been subjected to conditions for which it is not suitable? For example is it wet or excessively contaminated?
- Is there damage to the external casing of the equipment or are there any loose parts or screws?
- Is there any evidence of over-heating (burn marks or discolouration)
At this point if the appliance passes all of the above criteria full electrical tests are then carried out.
The checks and inspection outlined above should reveal most potentially dangerous faults. However not all faults are detectable by simply carrying out a visual inspection.
The electrical tests consist of:
- loss of earth integrity (earth test)
- deterioration of insulation integrity (insulation test)
- other associated tests as required / necessary (earth leakage / load testing)
The above testing procedures should identify all possible faults of any appliances which require repair or removing from service.
